Northeast Florida History: Blanche Ames travelled from Massachusetts to winter in Ormond Beach. Ames was a political activist, an outspoken feminist for women's rights to vote and birth control. She was well known for her botanical illustrations of orchids. Ames was an inventor with several patents; a method for using strings held by balloons at high altitudes to trip up the propellers of enemy planes during World War II and a honeycomb dye cut machine to name a few.
