Gallery > Sea, Land, Sky

Sea, Land, Sky is a collection of works that explore various histories related to a deeper understanding of the landscape. Personal observations and interactions with the natural world pique my curiosity. I seek events of the people who occupied the space before me. Star charting and mapping to discover new lands, the cultivation of land under enslaved labor and a desire for earth’s resources provide content for the visual work. In response to the past, I consider the future with pieces that comment on climate change.

As one enters the gallery, the work is installed below eye level, slightly increasing throughout the space with the highest point at the farthest most point. This intended arrangement is meant to simulate one’s physical movement in a landscape. An installation in an alcove challenges the sense of space as the viewer is immersed in an environment that visually shifts with physical movement. Intricate details, whether hand stitched, sculpted or drawn, are meant to provide moments of investigation. Poet and scientist Ben Atkinson’s words are placed across the gallery in corner installations, with mirrors reflecting text. The installations are intended to provide discovery while raising awareness of climate change, culminating our relationship with the sea, land and sky.

This exhibition was funded by DePauw University and installed in the Peeler Art Center.
