Blanche Ames travelled from Massachusetts to winter in Ormond Beach. Ames was a political activist, an outspoken feminist for women's rights to vote and women's rights to birth control. She was well known for her botanical illustrations of orchids. Ames also was an inventor with several patents; a method for using strings held by balloons at high altitudes to trip up the propellers of enemy planes during World War II and a honeycomb dye cut machine to name a few.
