Northeast Florida History: Greeks and Sicilians were promised a better life in a new world. The indentured servants agreed to eight years of labor on an indigo plantation in New Smyrna Beach. Poor living and working conditions prompted the group to march north to St. Augustine where they were granted freedom. Descendants from this group are known as Mencoran in current day St. Augustine.
